On the south-eastern coast of the Laconic Mani, nestled between steep cliffs and imposing Mani towers, lies the breathtaking, shimmering turquoise-blue bay of Alypa. Around 40 km south of the picturesque port town of Gythio and around 20 km from Areopolis, the small settlement of Alypa stretches out directly by the sea. With only around forty inhabitants, a handful of historic residential towers and a quaint taverna, this place retains its original charm.
The deeply indented bay once served as the natural harbor of Mani. In times when this remote region was not yet connected to the road network, old boats and sailing ships connected Alypa with Gythio and Piraeus via the small pier.
Today, visitors can swim in the crystal-clear waters of this protected, idyllic bay and enjoy the unspoiled nature away from mass tourism. The picturesque pebble beach with its characteristic tower houses has already served as a backdrop for well-known TV commercials and films. In 1982, some scenes from the American film Tempes by John Cassavetes were filmed here. A famous commercial for a well-known ouzo brand was also shot in the only taverna on the beach.
The historic Mani residential tower from the 1890s stands just a few steps away from this unique, sheltered bay. In 2008, the family estate was lovingly restored and converted into a comfortable vacation home. Today, the Alypa Pyrgos offers its guests an unforgettable stay in close proximity to the sea - with the perfect combination of traditional charm and modern comfort.
